Crabby Province Rocks

The Bionic Salesman
A Journey around Thailand

The flat sea was too much for my children’s grandfather. A mountain man, not used to flat horizons, he spent the boat journey from Phi Phi to Krabi taking gulps of air on the rear deck as vertical karst rocks passed us like papercuts in the brilliant sun.

From the seaport, we bounced around in the back of a tuk-tuk as we made the final push, through more vertical rocks, to Ao Nang Beach.

Krabs from Krabi

Krabi Province is wilder and more picturesque than Phuket, and the strangeness of the landscape gives a true sense of being away. The beach at Ao Nang is mercifully free of deck-chairs and umbrellas.

We placed the Waboba Balls in three shops – Aquaworld and the Nok Minimart in Ao Nang, and Highland Rock Climbing in Railay, which you can reach by taking a longtail boat from Ao Nang Beach.

Our three-year-old thought he was in beachcombers’ heaven. “Did you say, ‘Crabby Province’?”
